620 – Red Tape

On connaît toutes et tous l’expression « Red Tape » synonyme de bureaucratie ou de paperasse excessive. Lors de ma dernière visite aux U.S. National Archives, j’ai rapporté un presse-papier original à l’intérieur duquel est encapsulé un bout de ruban rouge et où on peut y lire ceci :

The « Original » Red Tape

Enclose dis a piece of original red twill tape once used to bind

U.S. Gopvernment Documents. To have access to a document,

you would have to « cut through the red tape ».

This strip was taken from Civil War documents, found in the

records of the Union Army, by volonteers of the Civil War

Records Conservation Corps at the National Archives and

Records Administration

Admettez avec moi que cette utilisation du « Red Tape » est beaucoup plus noble et son historicité particulière.
